BKV Group was hired by Spotsylvania County to provide master planning, programming, design, construction documents, and construction administration for the addition and renovation of Company 6 Fire Station. This station has the highest call volume of all fire stations in Spotsylvania County, and currently houses eleven staff members in just three small bedrooms.
Client: Spotsylvania County, VA
Type: Fire Station
Size: 9,110 SF
The addition and renovation accommodate a future staff of 14. The design includes 14 individual bunkrooms, four changing rooms, a new day room, dining room kitchen suite, 42 personal lockers, a laundry room, administrative offices, and a public lobby and restroom. On the east side, a new addition will feature operational spaces such as a PPE gear storage room, a decontamination room, and a main electrical room. Repurposed areas will provide space for a new shop and SCBA equipment room. The project adds 4,000 square feet to the existing station, but seamlessly integrates into the original colonial architecture.
BKV Group carefully planned the construction phases, ensuring that critical operations would be relocated to the new addition before renovations began in the existing structure. The team worked closely with the fire department to balance construction with minimal disruption, as no temporary station could be funded, and the station is the busiest in the county. The phased approach was designed in five steps to ensure the building remained operational throughout the process, reducing the need for temporary walls by using existing ones as much as possible.
