Elk River Fire Station #3
BKV Group provided full design services for a new fire station in the growing neighborhood of Elk River, MN.Read More
BKV Group was hired by the City of Waconia to clarify the need for relocating their fire station, select a site, establish the building program, and develop an appropriate project budget. BKV Group reviewed existing conditions to validate the need to retire the existing facility, then conducted a space needs analysis, a GIS response time analysis, and some site master planning to evaluate potential relocation parcels. Once City Council selected a site and adopted the proposed project budget, the City hired BKV Group to enter the design phases.
The exterior design takes its inspiration from the City’s first fire station with a brick façade, mostly flat roofs, framed glass apparatus doors, a tower element, smaller punched windows, and some stone detailing at significant building elements.
Visitors are welcomed via a landscaped entry plaza and an historic REO Speedwagon parade truck under a tall “tower” element. Staff offices retain quick access to the apparatus bays and the station kitchen, although there are doors for acoustic separations.
The building will have six apparatus bays split into two rooms around a central support bar that includes a robust collection of build-in training elements.
To the west of the bays will be a personnel decontamination suite (including steam showers), dayroom and kitchen/dining space, bunk rooms for duty-crews, and a physical conditioning room with outside access. Closer to the street is a 100-person community room for use by the Department during training meetings, but also planned as a polling place.
