Located near McKinley Park, 180 Degrees St. Cloud Youth Shelter is the only 24-hour emergency shelter for youth under 19 in a large, 13-county region of Central Minnesota. Designed as a trauma-informed center, this project creates an environment for healing of individuals and families through responsible living skills and learning interactions with the natural site.

CLIENT: 180 Degrees
TYPE: Supportive Housing

In meeting the guidelines for infectious disease control and programming for trauma informed design, BKV  redesigned the shelter to feature the following:

  • Single occupancy rooms to better serve LGBTQ teens as well as quarantine rooms for infectious disease
    control.
  • Multiple separated common spaces based on needs of separation in residences.
  • Enhanced circulation paths for better
    physical distancing.
  • Comfortable and calming therapy & wellness rooms

More than 2,500 youth have turned to 180 Degrees St. Cloud Youth Shelter for shelter, with the remodel allowing teens to customize their space to feel comfortable, inspired, and trust that they will receive the necessary care.

Open 24-hours, 7 days a week, 180 Degrees’ supportive program serves youth ages 12-19 from across Central Minnesota who experience or are at-risk for homelessness, sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, violence and neglect. Case managers empower youth to identify strengths, explore resources, and develop goals and plans to realize their potential.
