The original Von Wald emergency shelter was founded in 1989 as a safe place for youth in crisis from Rochester and the surrounding communities in southern Minnesota. BKV was commissioned to redesign the shelter to create a nurturing, safe, and structured living environment — a place for healing youth and their families through awareness of the natural environment and programs that focus on health and wellness.
The design process began during a discovery session with 180 leadership, staff, and residents of the shelter. BKV explored and identified opportunities to create spaces for family engagement, individual therapy, and counseling, recreation, life skills, physical health, shared kitchen, and garden-to-table concepts.
Designed in collaboration with Ewert Studio, the shelter’s success is in creating a place where people want to be by combining thoughtful, empathetic design with 180 Degrees’ programming and services.
