Cottage Grove, MN
The Legends of Cottage Grove community is a four-story building that features 184 affordable senior apartments. Residents take advantage of the convenient location with parks, shopping, and restaurants all nearby. The site is at the intersection of 140th Street W and Cedar Avenue South, with quick access to Interstate 35E. The building takes advantage of an existing vacant lot for its design. A majority of the resident parking is located below the building in an enclosed parking garage. Guests also take advantage of additional parking provided in an auto court at the front of the building.
This senior housing development provides lifestyle living opportunities for seniors 55 and older. The building features an entry lounge, library, clubroom, and social room for cards and crafts. Other amenities include a fitness room, theater, salon, and outdoor gathering spaces. The exterior design of the building takes queues from the American Arts and Crafts movement. These components are characterized by expressive trim and structural elements such as eave brackets, built-up columns, an ornamental entry canopy and trellis.
A Nostalgic Design
When approaching the site, visitors first experience illuminated vaulted ceilings and glassy corners. The architectural elements that make up each facade relate to each other in a hierarchy that helps potential residents make sense of the building upon arrival. Carefully composed “vignettes” and a porte cochere identifies the front entry. These elements also help to break down the large size of the building into a more welcoming scale.
