BKV Group was selected to design the new Fire Station and Community Health Building in Edina based on our strong relationship with the City and successful delivery of past civic projects, including the City Hall and Police Station. This new facility replaces a small, outdated fire station and anchors a larger City-led redevelopment transforming a light industrial area into a mixed-use neighborhood with 10-story buildings.

Client: City of Edina, MN
Type: Fire Station
Size: 35,135 SF, 5 drive-through bays, 10 bunk suites

Working with the City and construction manager Kraus-Anderson, BKV led programming and schematic design to align the building’s size and budget with department needs. The Fire Department prioritized security and operational efficiency, while the Community Health Department required public-facing amenities. Cost-saving revisions included removing a fifth apparatus bay and two bunk rooms. Surveys and shift meetings informed the final design.

The first floor includes four apparatus bays, fire station offices, Community Health Department spaces, a public Community Room, and a shared fitness center. The second floor features a high-amenity dayroom, covered outdoor patio, and 10 private firefighter suites. Specialized training elements include a five-story tower for ladder, hose, and rappel training, a mezzanine, mock cell tower, and confined space props. The facility supports the regional technical rescue team and is a critical step in Edina’s broader redevelopment vision.
