The new station marks a significant transition for the Y-12 Fire Department from day-shift operations to a 24/7 department, recognizing that fire prevention and safety are even more critical around hazardous materials. The old fire station building serving them, which was originally constructed in the 1940s and expanded in the ‘60s and ‘80s, had many issues, and after careful discussion and planning, our design team upgraded the firehouse to not only improve the working environment for the firefighters, but also their lifestyle, allowing them to transition to a more traditional schedule, in addition to housing better and more effective equipment. This fall, we were excited to see our client move into their new station which Fire Chief James Arnold stated “will improve our department’s ability to serve the plant and our community.”
