Since 2018, BKV Group has enjoyed a strong partnering relationship with Spotsylvania County Public Works and the Fire Department. BKV Group was initially selected for a phased-occupied addition and renovation for Company 6. Spotsylvania toured the completed Short Pump Firehouse 19 and was very excited about the quality of the design and the delivered building. Henrico County highly recommended BKV Group, and thus began another strong partnership for planning fire stations continuing with Fire Station #3.
BKV Group was selected to help Spotsylvania County design a new prototype fire station and implement it on two sites. BKV worked closely with the county to develop a program that includes some significant departures from their previous facilities. To help the county understand how those changes will impact the look and feel of each space, BKV created Space Standards that documented each space, allowing the county to be comfortable with the proposed spaces before the prototype floor plans were developed.
As part of BKV Group’s programming validation process and having developed the prototype design through three successive firehouse design commissions, BKV Group followed station design guidelines for the Spotsylvania County Fire Station #3.
Station #3 is located in the Partlow community, a rural area of the county, on a forested corner of existing county property with significant topography and wetlands challenges. In response to high number of variables imposed by the constraints, the BKV Group team explored six separate site plan options to address the extreme site development restrictions. Risks were assessed indepth before deciding on the final design.
