Pennington County Jail Expansion & Remodel

The new Pennington County Jail Addition and remodel consists of a two phase approach toward upgrading the current county jail. The downtown site, east of the Main Jail and north of the Jail Annex, can accommodate a new four-story addition (4A) with 600 beds, bringing the total site capacity to 1,200. beds.

Phase 1 includes a new housing addition with a modified remote podular officer station open to the corridor. It features eight paired housing separations, allowing shared program/recreationspace. The unit can house 110 to 148 beds, depending on configuration. Initially, single-bunk cells will occupy the main level, with double-bunked cells on the mezzanine. Dayrooms are sized for double bunking, ensuring future flexibility. A shelled-in medical clinic/office area is planned for future use.
Phase 2 involves renovating the lower level of the main jail into a new booking/intake center, requiring a vehicle sallyport addition north of the two facilities. The medical clinic/office area will also be completed in this phase.
A future project includes replacing vertical piping and cell fronts in the main jail. This costly effort necessitates increased housing capacity to rotate housing units during renovations. The work entails removing vertical water piping, toilets, sinks, and sanitary sewer piping, requiring demolition of chase and cell front walls. New walls, doors, and security systems will be installed. The renovation will be phased by quadrant to ensure proper system connections. Additional future phases anticipate constructing three more housing floors, enhancing separation and program spaces, and remodeling the jail administration floor.
