Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Justice Center & Tribal Police
The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe is a Native American tribe located in central Minnesota. The Band has more than 11,000 members, covering over 700,000 acres and located throughout four different counties. The Band’s goal was to develop a centrally located tribal government center that would include a regional justice center and tribal police facility.
After a series of initial site analyses and space program reviews, our team identified a plan to meet the Band’s long-term objectives. The plan consists of a single-story 30,000 SF building laid out to create clear circulation and separation between public, staff, and detainees. The exterior design is in line with the Band’s direction to create a modern design using classical and durable materials. As the design evolved, the team worked with the Band to incorporate cultural aspects that reinforce the sense of community and reflect Ojibwe culture.
